Who Needs Puerto Rico Child Care Training?

Whether you are a new caregiver, assistant teacher, center director, home caregiver, or family care provider, ChildCareEd offers approved coursework that helps you meet Puerto Rico’s legal requirements under Ley 173-2016.

Puerto Rico licensing rules require training for:

• Centros de Cuidado, Desarrollo y Aprendizaje
• Centros Preescolares / Pre-K
• Hogares de Cuidado
• Hogares de Crianza
• Hogares de Grupo
• Instituciones
• CCDF-funded programs (must meet ACUDEN’s minimum training standards)
• CDA-required personnel (centers must employ staff with a CDA credential or actively working toward one)

Ley 173-2016 requires:

• CDA certification or renewal every 3 years for direct-service center personnel (Art. 3.05)
• 30 hours of Competency Training for operators & direct-service staff in Hogares de Cuidado, Crianza, Grupo & Instituciones (Chapter VIII)
• 10 hours for indirect staff (maintenance, kitchen, transport) under Chapter VIII
• Mandatory training on child maltreatment & institutional abuse for all staff annually (Art. 3.05)

Approved Puerto Rico Child Care Training

CDA Credential Training (Required for Center Personnel)

Puerto Rico established the CDA (Child Development Associate) Credential as a licensing requirement for center directors, teachers, and assistant teachers beginning in 2016. This requirement was implemented as part of statewide efforts to improve early childhood workforce quality, and is widely recognized by ACUDEN and the Department of the Family.
