ChildCareEd is approved through the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE), Office of Child Care Health and Safety. All ChildCareEd courses are accepted toward initial and ongoing training requirements for those who work in licensed child day centers and licensed family day homes, including caregivers, program leaders, program directors, administrators, assistants, aides, and substitute providers.

ChildCareEd is also an IACET Accredited Provider, and eligible courses award CEUs that are widely recognized for professional development.

What Virginia Approved Training Does ChildCareEd Provide?

ChildCareEd offers Virginia-accepted training in convenient formats designed to fit busy schedules and staffing needs:

  • Online self-paced training (available anytime)
  • Virtual Instructor-Led training led by an Educational Specialist
  • Multilingual course options (excluding media portions), including Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Urdu, Farsi, and more
  • Support for individual educators and teams working toward required training hours

Annual Training Requirements

Virginia providers are required to complete 16 hours of training annually. ChildCareEd makes it easy to complete annual training online with a wide selection of courses covering health and safety, professionalism, guidance, curriculum, and more.

Virginia’s Career Pathways recognizes professional development and credentials, and practitioners may submit documentation through the IMPACT registry as part of their professional record.

CDA Credential Training

In Virginia, the Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential may be used to help meet qualification requirements for the following roles in licensed child day centers and family day homes, depending on the setting, age group served, and additional experience or training:

  • Child Caregiver / Teacher
  • Assistant Teacher
  • Program Leader (may require additional leadership or management training)
  • Family Day Home Provider
  • Family Day Home Assistant
  • Infant/Toddler Caregiver
  • Preschool Teacher
  • School-Age Child Care Staff
  • Substitute Provider (when permitted by licensing)
