The Natural Math Community created Math Storytelling Day in 2009 in order to get more people interested in math, this can be through games, storybooks, puzzles, videos, and a lot more. Math storytelling appreciates and celebrates the way children use math in their daily lives in play and learning. Fun stories and activities can make it easy for people to learn math better.

Math concepts should be learned through exploration and experience with hands-on materials, learning math concepts in this way is much more meaningful than having children discuss concepts centered on the calendar.

Some simple ways to include math in preschool classrooms:

  • Fingerplays and songs that use counting.
  • Puzzles
  • Patterns
  • Block building
  • Manipulatives
  • Math books
  • Sorting
  • Graphing

Items to include in the math center:

  • Balance scale
  • Pattern blocks
  • Bear counters
  • Clocks
  • Sand timers
  • Geometric shapes
  • Dice
  • Writing materials
  • Dominos
  • Mathlink cubes
  • Calculators
  • Geo boards
  • Number magnets
  • Measuring tape
  • Math books
  • Puzzles
