In California, to be a fully qualified teacher, an individual shall have a current and valid Child Development Associate (CDA) credential with the appropriate age-level endorsement issued by the CDA National Credentialing Program of the Council for Early Childhood Professional Recognition. (Regulation 101216.1 of the California Health and Human Services Child Care General Licensing Requirments.)
What exactly is the Child Development Associate Credential? The Child Development Associate® (CDA) Credential™ is the most widely recognized credential in early childhood education (ECE), and it is a crucial stepping stone on the path of career advancement in ECE. The CDA® is based on a core set of competency standards that guide early childhood professionals toward becoming qualified educators of young children. The CDA requires the completion of 120 clock hours of training in one of the following specializations:
- Infant/ Toddler
- Family Child Care
Over the course of those 120 clock hours, you will receive extensive information and training in 8 critical areas related to Early Childhood Education. Those 8 areas consist of:
- Safe and Healthy Environments
- Physical and Intellectual Development
- Social and Emotional Development
- Relationships with Families
- Program Operation
- Observing and Recording Children’s Behavior
- Principles of Child Development and Learning
With a comprehensive curriculum like this, you will be well equipped to be a teacher in a preschool or infant/toddler classroom in California.
