According to childcare.gov, a childcare program’s quality depends on many factors. One of the most important aspects of a high-quality childcare provider is education and training. All adults caring for children should receive annual training on key health and safety topics.
Many state licensing rules and regulations include health and safety training requirements for adults working with children. In addition, federal law requires specific health and safety training for providers who care for children receiving federal financial assistance.
The federal requirements include the following important topics for health and safety training, which apply to adults caring for children in all types of childcare settings. Trainings should be customized for the setting and the age of the children being cared for. Typical training requirements are:
- Pediatric first aid and CPR
- Prevention and control of infectious diseases (including immunizations)
- Safe sleep practices and prevention of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)
- Prevention of shaken baby syndrome, abusive head trauma, and child mistreatment
- Recognition and prevention of child abuse and neglect
- Use of medication
- Prevention of and response to emergencies caused by food allergies
- Emergency preparedness and response for natural disasters and other events
- Handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials
- Indoor and outdoor safety (including protecting children from hazards, bodies of water, and traffic)
- Safety when transporting children (if applicable)
- Child development, physical activity, and nutrition

H&H Child Care Training courses are accepted by the Connecticut Office of Early Childhood towards the one percent of total annual hours worked of professional development requirements for those who work in family childcare homes, large family childcare homes and childcare facilities/centers. This includes directors, employees, operators, providers, and substitutes.
H & H Child Care Training Courses grant .2 CEUs or more as well as awarding state approved clock hours of 2 or more for all childcare centers, and family childcare providers. Please note, our Administration courses may be used for your professional development requirements; however, they cannot be used to meet the 3 college credits in administration required for program directors.
