Maryland Pre-K Expansion Grant-Focused Training

Pre-K Grant-Focused Training Collection

Maryland Pre-K Expansion Grant programs are expected to provide meaningful professional learning that strengthens instructional practice, supports school readiness, and improves outcomes for young children.

ChildCareEd’s Pre-K Grant-Focused Training Collection is designed for lead teachers, teaching assistants, instructional leaders, and administrators working in Maryland grant-funded Pre-K programs.

ChildCareEd’s 20-Hour Pre-K Professional Learning Pathway

ChildCareEd’s Pre-K Grant-Focused Training Collection is designed to help teachers and teaching assistants strengthen the knowledge and classroom practices needed to provide high-quality, developmentally appropriate Pre-K instruction.

Our courses address the professional learning priorities identified by the Maryland State Department of Education, including early language and literacy, the Science of Reading, early mathematics, social foundations, High-Quality Instructional Materials, teacher-child interactions, assessment, and continuous quality improvement.

What Is the Professional Learning Requirement?

Maryland’s Pre-K Expansion Grant requires programs to describe professional learning activities for instructional staff—including teachers and teaching assistants—that total 20 hours and support school readiness.

The professional learning plan must address alignment with the Maryland Early Learning Standards and include priorities such as:

  • Early language and literacy
  • The Science of Reading
  • Early mathematics
  • Social foundations
  • High-Quality Instructional Materials, or HQIM
  • CLASS®
  • Other topics that support effective instruction

MSDE identifies the required total and the priority areas, but it does not prescribe one statewide course sequence or a specific number of hours for each topic. Programs should select professional learning that responds to the needs of their educators, children, curriculum, and quality-improvement goals.

The 20 hours are professional learning requirements for instructional staff. They are separate from licensing, credentialing, First Aid, CPR, health and safety, and other employment requirements.

No. Health and safety courses do not count toward the required 20 hours of Pre-K professional learning

The grant identifies CLASS as a professional learning priority, but it does not state that every teacher and assistant must become a certified CLASS observer or complete one specific official CLASS course. A program may use teacher-child interaction training as part of its professional learning plan.

No. The ChildCareEd course helps teachers improve interactions associated with high-quality Pre-K instruction. It does not certify participants to conduct or score CLASS observations.
