Pre-Service Health & Safety Training — Required by LARA

Michigan requires family child care home providers and staff to complete the following health and safety training before caring for children (R400.1905):

Licensure Requirements

To become a licensed Family Child Care Home Provider in Michigan, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age and permanently reside in the child care home
  • Hold a high school diploma, GED, or complete an approved MiRegistry training track
  • Obtain current certification in infant, child, and adult CPR and First Aid
  • Attend a 6-hour in-person licensing orientation provided by the LARA Child Care Licensing Division (counts toward annual training hours)
  • Pass a comprehensive background check (fingerprinting required for all adult household members)

Annual Training Requirements

Michigan requires the following annual training hours for licensed family child care home providers, assessed by calendar year. CPR, first aid, and infectious disease training do not count toward these totals.

  • Licensee (home provider): 10 clock hours per calendar year — topics related to child development, program planning, and administrative management
  • Child care staff member or assistant caregiver: 5 clock hours per calendar year — topics related to child development and caring for children
