ChildCareEd courses may be used to fulfill professional learning requirements for the renewal of certifications for providers in Newfoundland and Labrador. ChildCareEd is an IACET accredited organization that provides CEUs for all of our online self-paced training courses.

The following are the education requirements for providers in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Association of Early Childhood Educators of Newfoundland and Labrador (AECENL) in partnership with the Department of Education processes and evaluates individuals for Certification Level.

Early Childhood Educators (ECEs):

  • Must have a two-year diploma in Early Childhood Education from a recognized institution.
  • They need to be certified by the provincial government at one of the three certification levels (Level I, II, or III), which correspond to their level of education and experience.

Child Care Home Providers:

  • For regulated family child care homes, providers must complete a 30-hour orientation course in early childhood education, covering topics such as child development, safety, and programming.
  • If the home provider wishes to care for more than four children, they must have an ECE certification or equivalent.

Assistants in Child Care Centers:

  • Assistants working under the supervision of a certified ECE must complete a minimum of 30 hours of training in early childhood development within the first year of employment.
  • No formal ECE diploma is required for assistants, but further training can improve career prospects and lead to certification.

All staff, including home providers and assistants, are required to have current certification in first aid and CPR.

Level I Certification:

  • Requires a one-year certificate in Early Childhood Education from a recognized institution.
  • Holders of Level I certification can work as assistants or in support roles in child care centers, under the supervision of higher-certified staff.

Level II Certification:

  • Requires a two-year diploma in Early Childhood Education from a recognized institution.
  • Level II certified individuals can work as primary educators in child care centers and family child care homes, taking on leadership roles in planning and implementing child care programs.

Level III Certification:

  • Requires a degree in Early Childhood Education, Child and Youth Care, or a related field, or a diploma in ECE plus additional post-secondary coursework.
  • Level III certified ECEs are eligible for supervisory and management positions, such as child care center directors, and may oversee program development and staff.

Renewal of Certifications requires between 10-30 hours of Professional Learning (PL) Hours depending on the certification level.
