Provider Requirement Levels

Gateways to Opportunity Credentials Illinois has a widely recognized system of credentials (ECE Level 1–6, Infant Toddler, and Illinois Director).

  • Steps to achieve: Join the Gateways Registry, complete the required training (Level 1 is training-based, higher levels require college credits), and submit an application.

Reimbursable Training Information through the State

  • Gateways to Opportunity Scholarship: Pays a percentage of tuition and fees for ECE degrees, certificates, and CDA credentials based on your income.
  • Great START: A wage supplement program (bonus) for staying in your job and furthering your education.

Opening a Childcare Facility in Illinois

  • Agency: Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS).

  • Steps: You must attend a licensing Orientation (often conducted by local Child Care Resource & Referral agencies).

Training we do not offer

  • Illinois Mandated Reporter: Must use the official DCFS online portal (Medical/Non-Medical version).
  • ANSI Accredited Food Handler: If required for your role, this must be an ANSI-accredited exam (e.g., ServSafe).
