A staff member responsible for caring for or teaching children must be at least 14 years of age (with written parental consent if under 16, in compliance with NDCC ch. 34-07); a member of the provider's immediate family may provide care if at least 12 years of age. Staff must be of good physical, cognitive, social, and emotional health and must receive orientation during the first week of work.
Training: Getting Started within 3 months, then the work-hours-based annual total (7–13 hours), plus annual mandated reporter and (if applicable) safe sleep & CPR/First Aid (in-person skills check required)
ChildCareEd Courses Approved: Registry-approved courses covering child development, health & safety, guidance, and the Staff 13-hour bundle. Hours are uploaded to Growing Futures automatically.
Getting Started (15-Hour Basic Course)
All North Dakota child care providers and staff are required to complete Getting Started, a 15-hour basic child care course, within the first three months of becoming licensed or employed. This free training may be retaken every three years as credit toward annual training requirements
