Provider Requirement Levels
EEC Professional Qualifications The state certifies you as a "Teacher," "Lead Teacher," or "Director." You typically cannot work in a group center without this certification.
- Steps to achieve: Take college courses in child development and submit transcripts to the Department of Early Education and Care (EEC).
Reimbursable Training Information through the State
- ECE Scholarship Program: Administered by the Office of Student Financial Assistance. Covers tuition for Associate, Bachelor, and Master’s degrees in ECE for employed providers.
- Educator/Provider Support (EPS) Network: Provides free or low-cost professional development and coaching through regional partners.
Opening a Childcare Facility in Massachusetts
- Agency: Department of Early Education and Care (EEC).

- Steps: You must attend the "Potential Provider Meeting" (PPM) orientation sessions (available for both Family Child Care and Group/School Age Care) before receiving an application.
Training we do not offer
- Certification and Qualification Training: ChildCareEd trainings are not acceptable for certification in Massachusetts, courses will only be accepted for yearly professional development hours for licensing.
- EEC Essentials: These 12 specific modules must be completed through the EEC's Learning Management System (StrongStart).
- 51A Mandated Reporter: Massachusetts requires the specific state-hosted training.
