Here is our How-To guide to a fun activity for your students to explore their sense of self and learn about their classmates!
Materials:
- Unbreakable hand mirrors (one for each child)
- Crayons or markers (optional)
- Large sheet of paper (optional)
Instructions:
- Gather the Crew: Gather your preschoolers in a circle and explain that today they'll be exploring something special about themselves and their friends.
- Mirror Time: Hand out a mirror to each child. Ask them to hold the mirror in front of their face and take a good look at themself.
- "I See..." Encourage children to share what they see in the mirror. Guide them to focus on positive aspects like hair color, eye color, freckles, glasses, or a big smile.
- Celebrating Differences: As children share their observations, emphasize that everyone has unique features and that's what makes us special!
- Mirror, Mirror on the Wall: (Optional - Extension Activity) If you have crayons or markers, provide a large sheet of paper on the floor. Encourage children to draw a self-portrait using the mirror as a guide.
- Sharing is Caring: Once everyone has finished drawing, have them hold up their portraits and share something special they drew about themselves. This can be done in a circle or displayed on a classroom wall to celebrate diversity.
Learning Objectives:
- Self-awareness: Children focus on their own physical features and begin to develop a sense of self-identity.
- Appreciation for Diversity: Children learn that everyone looks different and that these differences are something to celebrate.
- Confidence & Sharing: The activity encourages children to share their unique features with the class, building confidence and social skills.
Tips:
- For younger children, demonstrate how to use the mirror first.
- Keep the activity light and fun!
- Consider incorporating music or songs about celebrating differences.
- If you have children with disabilities, make sure to celebrate the things that make them unique as well.
